If you want to rent an electric scooter in Lisbon, you must first choose from different providers. The most famous is Lime, so I’ll use Lime as an example in this article (but it all works the same way).

3. Find a scooter on the street (or via the map in the app)
4. Scan the QR code on the scooter with the Lime app

With most providers, renting an electric scooter costs €1 to unlock and then €0.15 per minute to drive. That is €10 per hour!
As you can see, the costs can quickly add up.

If you plan to see and travel a lot in the city, public transport can be much cheaper. For example, with a Lisboa Card you can travel unlimited all day long with public transport and the nice trams in Lisbon.

How does the electric scooter work in Lisbon?

It works very simply: after you have unlocked a scooter, you unlock the scooter a few times. Then you can give electric gas. With your right hand you can speed up, with your left hand you can slow down. Keeping balance is not difficult 🙂

Advantages and disadvantages of the electric scooter in Lisbon

The advantages:

• You can easily explore the city without walking too much
• You can get from A to B faster
• It’s really a lot of fun!

The cons:

• Lisbon has few cycle paths so sometimes you have to cross the road or the footpath.
• Lisbon has a lot of small cups, which is sometimes not very comfortable on your scooter
• Lisbon has a lot of hills, especially if you are heavier, the scooter can have a hard time. Anyway, you can of course just step up 😜
• If you go down steeply, your scooter can go very fast. Be careful as this can be dangerous. You only need something on the road or something and you can fall hard. So good braking.
• Costs add up quickly. Traveling by public transport and the trams from Lisbon is much cheaper if you have a Lisboa Card.

The rules that apply when you rent an electric scooter

To guarantee safety, there are a number of rules when using an electric scooter in Lisbon. Here are the rules:

• It is not allowed to drive on the sidewalk. If there is a bicycle path, you ride on the bicycle path, otherwise on the roadway.
• You are not allowed to ride with two people on one e-step.
• You can drive a maximum of 25 km/h. This is about as fast as an electric bicycle. The steps can’t get any faster either
• It is not allowed to use a telephone, headphones or earphones while driving.
• It is forbidden to park your electric scooter in the historic red zone (the Alfama and Bairro Alto districts). Park your scooter a bit neatly at all 😊 The municipality has also marked certain areas where you can park the scooters. You can recognize them by the green stickers with P on them. It would be nice if you stick to that a bit (not everyone does that, you see the steps everywhere).
